Best Albums of 2008

October 12th 2009 08:19
It's obviously a bit late to do a best album of '08 list, but i didn't have a blog at the end of last year, so i figured what the hell? I might as well do it now.

3. Paper Route -- Are We All Forgotten [EP] -- Yeah I know this is supposed to be an album list but this EP is so good, I couldn't not mention it.
Are We All Forgotten

Here's the tracklist:
1. American Clouds
2. Are We All Forgotten
3. Empty House
4. You Kill Me
5. Waiting for the Final Leaf to Fall

Every song is absolutely amazing. My favorites are probably tracks one and two. It's hard to describe their sound. It's relatively unique. Some people say they sound like an 80's band, but I disagree. Just because they use synthesizers doesn't mean it's 80's. It's definitely not danceable music. It's very calm, yet emotional. Like sinking to the bottom of the ocean with your lover, and living there the rest of your life. Or something like that.

2. Gaslight Anthem -- The 59' Sound -- eMusic named The 59' sound their best album of 2008. This album is incredibly good.
'59 Sound

Tracklist:

1. Great Expectations
2. The '59 Sound
3. Old White Lincoln
4. High Lonesome
5. Film Noir
6. Miles Davis & The Cool
7. The Patient Ferris Wheel (featuring Dicky Barrett)
8. Casanova, Baby!
9. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
10. Meet Me by the River's Edge
11. Here's Looking at You, Kid
12. The Backseat

The best song is "Here's Looking at You, Kid." The title, of course, is from Casablanca. The song clearly has a lot of meaning to Brian Fallon, their lead singer. It's about all the girls that he's loved through his life, and how their relationships never worked out. The line "she should've married me" shows just how much of his heart he gave, only to have it broken. It's a beautiful song. And the album itself was recorded using some sweet effect
that makes it sound old, like it was recorded on vinyl from 1959.

1. MGMT -- Oracular Spectacular --
Oracular Spectacular

Tracklist:
1. Time to Pretend
2. Weekend Wars
3. The Youth
4. Electric Feel
5. Kids
6. 4th Dimensional Transition
7. Pieces of What
8. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters
9. The Handshake
10. Future Reflections

NME named this the best album of 2008. And there is no doubt it deserves it. Like Paper Route, they use a lot of synths, but unlike P.R.'s EP, this album is very "danceable." Especially "Electric Feel." It is probably my favorite song to dance to of all time. And "Electric Feel" isn't even my favorite song on the album. That would have to go to "Time to Pretend." It's all about living every day like it was your last, and not taking anything too seriously. At the same time, the song shows how if your life goes too far to this extreme, your life will still be completely empty. It's like it satires itself.

"Yeah it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?"
I love these lines. I'm all about not conforming to society and crap like that. I can't even imagine myself just going through the motions everyday. Going to work every morning til' I'm too old to have any fun? That sounds like a horrible life.

Anyway, the album would probably best be described as neopsychedelica. Its like 'shrooms for your ears.
